ECHA Launches Campaign to Update REACH Registrations
New compliance push targets outdated dossiers across industry
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is preparing to roll out two coordinated campaigns aimed at improving compliance with REACH registration obligations. This initiative focuses on ensuring that companies keep their dossiers accurate and aligned with current regulatory standards.
The first campaign will concentrate on joint submissions where a change in the lead registrant has occurred. In several cases, the newly appointed lead has not yet submitted the complete dataset required for the group. This gap creates inconsistencies and may weaken the reliability of shared information.
The second campaign targets registrations that fail to meet the EU’s harmonised classification requirements under the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation. These discrepancies can affect how hazards are communicated across the supply chain.
ECHA will directly contact affected registrants and request updates within a defined timeline. Companies are expected to act promptly and ensure their dossiers reflect the latest scientific and regulatory developments.
When should REACH dossiers be updated?
A REACH dossier must always reflect the most current knowledge about a substance and its safe use. Registration is not a one-time obligation; it requires continuous attention.
Updates are necessary when new information becomes available. This includes changes in tonnage, new identified uses, or modifications in substance composition. It also applies when companies receive an evaluation decision requesting additional data.
Regulatory developments can also trigger updates. Changes in information requirements or new entries in harmonised classification lists, often published through annual technical adaptations, must be considered.
ECHA may also conduct screening campaigns to identify weaknesses in submitted dossiers. While the agency may issue reminders, the responsibility remains with registrants.
In practice, companies should treat their registration as a living document, revising it whenever new data emerges. This approach not only ensures compliance but also strengthens chemical safety across the EU market.
