BPC September 2026 Meeting: Biocidal Products Committee approves 11 key opinions
Critical progress in active substances and union authorisations shakes up the BPR landscape
A significant wave of regulatory updates has emerged from the European Chemicals Agency this September. The Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) successfully concluded its most recent session, delivering crucial evaluations that will directly impact chemical compliance across the European Union.
Essential BPC approvals and endorsements
During the four-day intensive meeting, the committee finalised 11 active substance opinions, marking a major milestone for several product types (PT). Notably, the panel backed the addition of Arnica montana extract (CAS 68990-11-4) to Annex I. For pest control and preservation fields, the BPC approved Hexaflumuron (CAS 86479-06-3) for PT18 alongside IPBC (CAS 55406-53-6) for PT7 and PT9. Furthermore, a specialised opinion was reached to clarify the endocrine-disrupting (ED) properties of IPBC within PT8 and PT10.
Disinfection technologies also saw heavy activity. The committee approved free radicals generated in situ from ambient air or water for PT2, as well as active chlorine generated from sodium chloride and potassium peroxymonosulfate across PT2, PT3, PT4, and PT5. Beyond substance evaluations, the BPC reached a consensus on 9 Union Authorisations, closely followed by the official publication of seven implementing regulations granting centralised market access.
Upcoming regulatory committee meetings
The regulatory assembly line continues at pace. The BPG-Working Groups are currently concluding their targeted technical sessions. Looking ahead, the Coordination Group (CG) was scheduled to convene on mid September, followed by the highly anticipated Competent Authorities (CA) and Standing Committee on Biocidal Products (SCBP) summits at the end of the month. Concurrently, the SCBP is finishing a written consultation regarding the renewal of Hydrochloric Acid in PT2.
