5 new entries to SVHCs List
ECHA has recently expanded the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) by adding five new entries, bringing the total number of SVHCs to 247.
New entries to SVCHs List. This list identifies chemicals that pose a significant risk to human health or the environment. Companies are legally obligated to manage the risks associated with these substances and ensure that their customers and consumers are adequately informed about their safe use.
What substances have been included?
Two of the newly added substances, octamethyltrisiloxane and perfluamine, are classified as very persistent and very bioaccumulative. These substances are commonly used in the manufacture of various products, including washing and cleaning agents, as well as electrical, electronic, and optical equipment.
O,O,O-triphenyl phosphorothioate, another newly listed substance, exhibits persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic properties. Primarily used in the formulation of lubricants and greases, this substance poses significant environmental and potential human health risks.
Furthermore, the Candidate List now includes the reaction mass of: triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives. Although not registered under REACH, this substance was identified as an SVHC to prevent regrettable substitution, ensuring that safer alternatives are sought and developed.
Tris(4-nonylphenyl, branched and linear) phosphite, a substance used in the production of polymers, adhesives, sealants, and coatings, has been identified as an endocrine disruptor with adverse effects on the environment. The entry for this substance has been updated to specifically reflect that it poses an endocrine disruption risk to the environment both due to its intrinsic properties and when it contains ≥ 0.1% w/w of 4-nonylphenol, branched and linear (4-NP).
This update underscores the ongoing efforts of ECHA to identify and address the risks posed by hazardous chemicals, ensuring a safer environment for both humans and the ecosystem.
