K-REACH, Regulation of Chemical products in Korea
The Registration and Evaluation of Chemicals Act (known as Korea’s REACH) was passed by the plenary session of the Korean National Assembly on April 30, 2013 and came into force on January 1, 2015. In December 2016, the Ministry of Environment (MoE) began reviewing K-REACH and the modified K-REACH came into force on January 1, 2019.
The competent authority in South Korea for K-REACH is the Ministry of Environment (MoE). This is responsible for the registration and evaluation of chemical substances under this Law.
The purpose of K-REACH is to protect public health and the environment through these provisions:
- The registration/notification of chemical substances
- The exemption from Registration or Notification of Chemical Substances
- The notification of Substances subject to Intensive Control and the Notification of Products Containing Chemicals of Intensive Control and;
- The provision of information
According to the Korea REACH (K-REACH) there are currently 3 deadlines for the submission of chemical substance registrations based on their characteristics and their annual manufacturing or import tonnage:
December 31, 2021
Deadline for the registration of CMR substances greater than 1t/year and substances greater than 1000t/year
December 31, 2024
Deadline for registration of substances greater than 100t/year
December 31, 2027
Deadline for registration of substances greater than 10t/year
December 31, 2030
Deadline for registration of substances greater than 1t/year
Currently, the pre-registration of substances is no longer enabled, it ended in June 2019.
