The European Commission publishes the draft approval of prallethrin as an active substance (TP18)
Prallethrin to be approved as an active substance on 1 March 2026
On 27 February 2024, the ECHA Biocides Committee (ECHA BPC) issued a favourable opinion for the approval of prallethrin as a biocidal active substance under the BPR for product type 18 (insecticides, acaricides and products for the control of other arthropods). Subsequently, the European Commission published the draft approval of the active substance. This decision allows the continued marketing of biocidal products based on prallethrin in the EU to combat a wide range of insect pests.
What is prallethrin and what is it used for?
Chemical Name: 2-methyl-4-oxo-3-(prop-2-ynyl)cyclopent-2-en-1-yl 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-methylprop-1-enyl)cyclopropanecarboxylate CAS: 23031-36-9 EC: 245-387-9 Prallethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that acts as an insecticide and acaricide by contact and ingestion. It is commonly used in aerosol, spray or liquid form for pest control in homes, gardens, agricultural and livestock facilities, and for the protection of stored products. It is effective against a wide variety of insects, including mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches, fleas, ticks and moths.
Does it pose health risks?
Prallethrin is toxic if inhaled, very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects and harmful if swallowed. It is important to follow the instructions for use of prallethrin-based biocidal products to minimise the risks to human health and the environment.
What are the implications of the approval of prallethrin on 1 March 2026?
The approval of prallethrin as a biocidal active substance means that companies will need to submit authorisation applications in accordance with BPR to market prallethrin-based biocides in the EU. The authorisation application process includes:
- a rigorous assessment of the risks to human health and the environment
- demonstration of product efficacy
- determination of certain physicochemical properties of the product
What are the benefits of approving prallethrin?
The approval of prallethrin ensures the industry’s continued use of this active substance for pest control. This can help protect human health from harm caused by pests, such as the transmission of diseases.
It is important to note that the approval of the active substance does not imply the automatic authorisation of all biocidal products that contain it. Each biocidal product must be evaluated and authorised by ECHA or by the competent authorities of the Member States, depending on the applicable procedure.
