ADBAC/BKC approval for PT2 (Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals). As of July 1, 2025, Alkyl (C12-16) dimethylbenzylammonium chloride, more commonly known as ADBAC/BKC, will be approved for use in Type 2 biocides (Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals). This means that companies and manufacturers can continue to include this compound in their disinfectant and algaecide products, provided they comply with the requirements set out in the European Biocides Regulation (BPR).
What does this ADBAC/BKC approval for PT2 entail?
The approval of ADBAC/BKC involves the evaluation of all products containing it according to the requirements established by the BPR. Each formulation containing this active ingredient must undergo an individual evaluation process. The competent authorities will focus on reviewing aspects such as:
- Exposure: Assessing how users, both professional and domestic, may come into contact with the product.
- Risks: Assessing the potential harmful effects on human health and the environment.
- Efficacy: Verify that the product meets disinfection expectations.
What do companies need to do?
Companies wishing to market biocidal products containing ADBAC/BKC must:
- Obtain a Letter of Acccess for the active substance. This letter must be provided by an authorized supplier of the active substance.
- Be aware of the BPR requirements for the specific uses of their biocidal products.
- Define a current and future commercial strategy (5 or 6 years) in the EU. This will be essential for marketing in other markets and carrying out notification/registration procedures in those countries in accordance with their transitional laws (pre-BPR). Procedures must be carried out before the approval of the active substance in the BPR, as it is not possible to notify or register the product later and it cannot be marketed until the authorities have resolved the BPR application.
- Prepare a BPR authorization application (which Nordiik can prepare) for the formulated biocidal products.
- Determine the applicable fees according to the marketing countries.
- Have the BPR application ready and submit it to the competent authorities before the approval date.
Why is ADBAC/BKC important?
ADBAC/BKC is a very versatile compound with broad-spectrum disinfectant properties. Its effectiveness against bacteria, fungi, and some viruses has made it a key ingredient in many cleaning and disinfection products. However, its use must be strictly controlled to ensure the safety of people and the environment.
